Stop the Sag! How to Keep Your Sofa Cushions Looking New
Fri Aug 01 2025
Let’s face it, no one wants a saggy sofa. But over time, even the most high-quality cushions can lose their shape, turning your favorite seat into a flattened, lumpy disappointment.
At Home Furniture & More, we believe great furniture should last. With a little routine care (and a few expert tips), you can keep your cushions looking and feeling like new for years to come.
Here’s how to fight the sag and bring your sofa back to life:
Rotate and Flip Often
Sofa cushions are built with supportive cores and softer outer layers, which naturally compress with use. Rotating and flipping your cushions regularly helps the cushions wear evenly and prevents permanent dents in your go-to lounging spot. We recommend a monthly rotation for optimal wear and tear.
Have a chaise cushion that can’t be flipped? Try rotating it or placing it on the floor and walking on it gently to redistribute the filling. It may feel silly, but your cushions will thank you.
Pro tip: If your cushions slope toward the front or look like they’re sliding out of place, it may be time for a refresh from the inside. Carefully unzip the cover and flip or rotate the insert to even out compression. This is especially helpful for deeper sofas where the back edge rarely gets used.
Fluff Like a Pro
Every few months, give your back cushions a good fluffing. Remove them from the sofa, stand them upright, and smack the sides (gently but firmly) to break up clumps and restore their shape. We recommend doing this outside as it can also help get rid of built up dust and pet dander. If your cushion covers are washable, make sure to wash them first before you fluff!
Special Care for Down and Feather Fills
If your cushions are filled with feathers or down, they’ll need a little more love and care. Beat back cushions with your hand or a spoon to de-clump and use a kneading motion to redistribute the filling in seat cushions and throw pillows. Over time, some feathers may poke through—that’s completely normal and a sign your cushion is breathing properly.
