Size Matters, but There's More to It: Let's Talk About Furniture Measurements
Mon May 26 2025
At Home Furniture & More, we know that furniture isn’t just about filling a space, it’s about creating a HOME. If you’ve ever fallen in love with a sofa, only to realize it won’t fit through the front door, you’re not alone! Let’s talk about how to take the guesswork out of furniture shopping with smart measuring tips you can use before you buy.
How to Measure Like a Pro
Step 1: Measure Your Room
Start with the basics: length, width, and ceiling height. Bring a tape measure or a laser measure—and don’t forget to account for baseboards, molding, and architectural quirks like window frames or alcoves.
Step 2: Check Your Entryways and Hallways
Measure doorways, hallways, and stairwells carefully. Measure the path your furniture will take to its final room. Take both the width and height—and don’t skip diagonal measurements, which are crucial for getting bulky items like couches or larger dining tables inside without damage.
Step 3: Double- and Triple-Check
We hate to sound like your parents, but it’s true: Double-check all measurements. It’s much easier to measure twice now than to wrestle a too-large sectional through a too-small doorway later.
Key Dimensions to Know
-
Sofas: Total width, seat depth, back height, diagonal depth. (Tip: Diagonal depth is especially important for getting through doorways.)
-
Tables: Overall length, width, and height. (Tip: Leave about 36 inches of clearance around dining tables for chair movement.)
-
Beds: Mattress size, frame length and width. (Tip: Allow at least 24 inches of space around the bed for easy access.)
Special pieces like L-shaped sectionals or oversized dressers may require extra attention. Measure each section carefully to plan the best fit for your space.
Tools That Make It Easier
While a good old-fashioned tape measure does the trick, there are other handy tools you can use.
-
Laser measuring tools are fantastic for fast, precise measurements.
-
Apply painter’s tape to lay out furniture outlines on the floor. It’s a simple way to visualize how a new piece will fit and doesn’t leave a residue.
-
Try using graph paper sketches for planning layouts to scale. 1 square = 1 foot
