We Know Our Furniture Is Top-Notch, but How Do You? Tips for Identifying Quality Furniture

Tue Jul 01 2025

When it comes to choosing furniture for your home, looks matter, but so does quality. Buying new furniture is an investment and your new sofa, bed, or dining set should last for years to come.

So how can you tell if a piece of furniture is truly well-made? At Home Furniture & More, we’re committed to quality, and whether you’re shopping in our stores or browsing elsewhere, here are a few simple tips to help you spot quality construction and bring home furniture that is built to last.

    1. Strength Tests
One of the easiest ways to check furniture quality is to try it out! We encourage our customers to sit down, open drawers, lay on the mattress and make sure their furniture feels stable and secure. If a piece wobbles, creaks, or shifts under light pressure, that is a sign that it won’t hold up over time.

    2. Materials Matter
Not all wood furniture is created equal. Solid hardwood and high-quality wood veneers are much sturdier than particle board construction. Getting the source material is also important when it comes to fabrics. Genuine leather or performance textiles are going to last longer than bonded leather or synthetic materials. That said, top grain leather, though supple, is not a smart choice for homes with small children or pets. Make sure your furniture materials match your life and family needs!

    3. Check Construction Details
Look for dovetail or mortise-and-tenon joints on drawers and frames. These indicate strong, lasting craftsmanship. Avoid pieces held together with only glue, staples, or visible nails. That is a marker for cheap construction and lower quality. Drawers should glide smoothly and fit well in your bureaus and bedside tables. Don’t be afraid to really examine a piece before you commit to purchase! If you’re looking for specific construction details, our associates will be happy to help you locate examples in store.

    4. Know Your Cushions
Those trending all-foam, ship-to-your-door couches going viral on TikTok look cozy, but they won’t last. Down or down-wrapped cushions last longer and keep their shape better than basic foam. Reversible cushions are also a plus, as they help your furniture wear more evenly and last longer.

    5. Understand Price vs. Value
While price alone doesn’t guarantee quality, well-made furniture does cost a little more up front — and pays off over time. Investing in solid, durable pieces means fewer replacements down the road.
